MS Windows 98 SE
MS Windows 98
MS Windows 95 - only version 1.0.a44 will work

SOME COMMON ISSUES

Wireless networking

Please note that wired or wireless networking will dramatically affect performance on computers running any Windows 98 operating system and files cannot be exported. It is not recommended to use any processor less than 800Mhz PIII or Windows 2000 Pro with to network with QMServer.

The program does not recognize any pads.

First, you can order new pads that are sewn on all 4 sides from us for $50 per string. See the store for more information. These pads work with any version of QuizMachine

After starting the program and checking all options, the pads are not recognized. Some laptops, mostly IBM Thinkpads, use an Infared Port.  The parallel port interrupt and memory location has been set to one that does not recognize the interface box.  It will need to be changed.

In most cases a correction in the system steup can be accomplished by starting in the control panel.

1.   Click Start
2.   Click Settings then Control Panel (or just Control Panel
      depending on your OS)
3.   Click System
4.   Click Hardware
5.   Click Device Manager
6.   Expand the Ports (COM and LPT) selection
7.   Click Printer Port (LPT1)
8.   Select Resources
9.   Under Resource Settings, the I/O Range should be
0378-037FIf is not, then that is where the problem exists
10. The I/O Range will need to be changed to 0378-037F
11. Uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box
12. Using the drop down selection for Setting Based On, select
a configuration that has the I/O Range as 0378-037F
      but no IRQ.
13. Click OK until the Control Panel screen appears again.
14. The parallel and interface box should now recognize
      the pads.

PRICING

The pricing for the modules:

Another potential problem is that older Quiz Time (red box) pads and extension cords may not work with the interface box. The extension cords may not work using the Rick Lance pads (the square black and white pads) and the Kirkman clone pads (the red, yellow and green ones).  You might need to remove the extensions and just use the pads directly.  This might cause a problem when the pads are a good distance from the interface box.  The newer Quiz Time pads and extensions now work better because of an upgraded soldering process

1.  Cost of a single registration code - $25.00 If you own a copy of Rick Lance's Scorekeeper program then we will supply a  coupon that gives a $25.00 discount making the final cost $0.00. PLEASE contact us (use button in header or footer) for a coupon code for the $25 discount.

2. A free trial version is available by downloading the current version (see Downloads). The program can be used without attaching pads by touching the square next to the quizzer name simulating a jump. By using the User Manual, training can occur even with quizzers on the pads during practice.

3. For everyone there is an option to purchase a lifetime upgrade/fix maintenance fee onetime) of $25.00. HIGHLY recommended.

4. To add an additional 5 licenses to the original license licenses) the cost is another $25.00. To add 10 would be $25 and so forth. The lifetime maintenance fee would be included in the cost of #2 above. This is for District Directors only.

5. You can select an option to obtain a CD version for $35.00. The lifetime fee also applies to the CD version

6. You must register a user account to place orders online.

7. There is a 30 day free trial - it is the current version.

8. Your email address is part of the program registration key. is required to activate the product after the 30 day free trial.

9. A registration key is user based and may be transferred. QuizMachine.com must be notified of any transfers as a new registration key must be generated for the new email address. Districts and other organizations are examples of when codes could be transferred. If a code is not transferred then future updates whether a lifetime upgrade package was purchased or not, will not work.

10. Money collected for QuizMachine assisted for the USA/Canada program at NYI in Lenexa, KS. Administrative costs are the only other expense.

11. Payment can now be made through PayPal. Checks must be made payable to William L Horning with a comment entry for Quizmachine software purchase and mailed to Box 324 Dr. Manteno, IL 60950.

PCMCIA or Express Parallel Port Card

To use the parallel port interface box you will need either a computer with a parallel port or a PCMCIA or Express parallel port card. Find them at one of these locations:

PCMCIA parallel port cards can be purchased on EBay; search for PCMCIA parallel port cards; price is about $20 each. Do not purchase the Express cards on EBay as we have not tested those yet. or at this link:www.cooldrives.com

http://store.yahoo.com/cooldrives/software-dongle-lpt- pcmcia.html - or -

Quatech (they have been out of stock recently) http://sewelldirect.com/QuatechParallelPCMCIACard.asp

If you need an Express parallel port card, they can be purchased at one of these links:

I have also found some that others have gotten to work at these locations (much less expensive-$50 range):

OK, how does this all work?

First, a laptop or desktop computer (we do have IBM Thinkpad laptops with a parallel port available for a reasonable price) is needed that has a parallel port. Considering how most newer computers do not have a parallel port, a PCMCIA or Express (34mm or 54mm) port is needed. See the notes below for specific computer requirements.

USB to Parallel converter cables (such as from Radio Shack) will not work so do not waste your time. Neither will serial to parallel cables.

The clone pads (see links for ordering the correct pads) connect to the interface box which the connects to the computer's parallel port. QuizMachine reads the data from the pads to determine which quizzer was the first to jump.

QuizMachine not only determines which quizzer was first to jump, but also keeps the score by quizzer and team. A printed score sheet is also available. Once a round is complete a file can be created and loaded into QMServer and statistics for all rooms is compiled within a few minutes. QMServer produces reports for both individuals and teams. These reports can be exported to a spreadsheet file and used in other programs is desired. The points for teams can be calculated automatically using Olympic, Modified Olympic or can be Win/Loss. The amount of points for the Olympic styles can be configured (ie, 5 points for 1st, 3 for second and 1 for third). The type used can also be selected, Olympic, Modified Olympic or W/L and can be different from one tournament to another.

The free 30 day trial version may also be used for training and practice with QMServer. See the download section for the User Manual.

SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS

For version 3, we recommend:

- Pentium II, 800Mhz processor or a newer Celeron
1.2Ghz or greater.   We have tested on lesser
machines with some success, but the problems
seem to be with slow video (the display is 1-3
seconds after the jump). Try slower
   processors at your own risk

- Minimum of 96Mb or RAM  (we have tested with
less but the results are not always the best)

- 20Gb disk drive with at least 1Gb free

- Disk defragmentation run on a regular basis

- 1 Parallel port for the current interface box
(this seems to be a problem with the newer
   laptops (see teksale.com or tigerdirect.com
   for some inexpensive refurbished laptops);
see other questions about the use of a parallel
port in IBM Thinkpad computers or those that
   use Infrared (IR) ports.

- 1-2 USB ports for printer use

- A mouse

- A monitor port for projection use

- For older versions without QMServer active   (networked; either wired or wireless): Minimum   operating system: Windows 2000 Pro Processor   PIII 600Mhz For version 2 with QMServer active   (networked; either wired or wireless): Operating   system minimum: Windows 2000 PRO Processor:   PIII 800Mhz

LAPTOP COMPUTERS

We have computers for sale. These
are excellent for both QuizMachine and personal use. IBM/Lenovo brands are recommended for QuizMachine as these brands and models (T40/T61) provide excellent processors and parallel ports (well, the T40's do, the T61's have PCMCIA card slots)

Order Products

The new USB Interface Box can now be ordered and are shipping!

QuizMachine and QMServer were created for Nazarene style bible quizzing. As time allows, we may be able to allow other quizzing types.
